Annual Club Membership

Do you wonder who takes care of the animals that live at the Sunny Rock 4-H Barn? Our animal club members do! Twice each day, morning and afternoon, club members arrive to give our animals all that they need: food, water, a clean place to live, exercise, and lots of love. As a member, you would arrive at the barn on your weekly morning or afternoon shift to spend time with your club’s animals, providing them with lots of attention along with their basic needs.

During your annual club membership year, you will be part of the cycle of farm life, from breeding in the fall through birthing in the spring. Spring brings joyful new life with lambs and kids needing your care and attention.

You will become an integral part of the running of our barn, learning in the fall from our experienced club leaders how to take care of your club’s animals, and then taking on the responsibility of caring for them each week. During monthly club meetings you will meet with your fellow club members and leaders for hands-on learning experiences with your animals. In any given meeting, you might walk a rabbit on a leash, learn to weigh and size eggs, trim hooves, take temperatures, sheer wool, or witness a veterinarian perform an ultrasound.

Our barn is a destination for visitors looking for a farm experience, and you will have the opportunity to share your knowledge with those who stop by to see your club’s animals.

Here is how our club membership works: Each youth member registers for a full calendar year, from October 1 through September 30, and is then assigned to tend the animals in your specific club – goat, sheep, horse, rabbit, or poultry – each week along with a parent. We do our best to find a weekly slot that works in your schedule, and our club members cover for each other as needed. Members age 8 and up are eligible to join our rabbit or poultry club; age 9 and up are eligible to join our sheep, goat, or horse club.

The first step to becoming a Sunny Rock 4-H member is attending one of our annual September information meetings. Please contact us here to join our email list to receive an invitation to our information meetings.

Cloverbud Club

Picture
Members age 5 to 7 join our Cloverbud program and gather each month at the barn to meet and learn about our animals. Cloverbuds get lots of time with our adorable rabbits, just the right size animal for this age group. At each meeting, members learn about different animals, do a hands-on arts and crafts project, and depending on the weather, may even walk a rabbit on a leash. In the spring, our Cloverbuds experience the delight of new lambs and kids playing in our barn. Many of our Cloverbuds move up to our rabbit or poultry clubs once they reach age 8.

Goat Club

The Goat Club breeds and raises Registered Nubian goats.

We currently have one purebred Nubian buck, Joule. We also have six does: Luna, Lily, Gardenia, Rose, Dipper, and Latte.

Horse Club

Picture
The miniature horse club was founded in 2008. We currently have 14 members ranging in age from 10-17.

We have 2 miniature horses at Sunny Rock.  Perfect, a 9 year old, 35"gelding and Jack, a 3 yr old 36" gelding. We use both horses for pony rides and in the summer members will compete with them at local shows. Members are responsible for feeding, grooming, and exercising both horses on their assigned day to help out.

We accept new members over the age of 9. Previous horse experience is not necessary to join. Club meetings will happen  usually once a month. They are generally geared towards learning about different horse topics in order to prepare for the hippology and horse bowl tests each January. We also attend clinics, shows and seminars whenever we can.

Poultry Club

Picture
Our poultry club members check in on our flock twice each day to collect the various-colored eggs laid by our hens, and to provide fresh food and water. Behind our barn, our birds live in their own custom-built coop containing a roosting rack - how fun to see them all settle together onto the raised horizontal roosts for the night; laying boxes – where hens choose which of many nooks to lay their eggs in; and a hen-sized door for them to access their outdoor pen. Our members get to know each of the hens with their various colors and personalities. In the spring, club members hatch eggs, raise chicks, and experience their growth into hens and roosters. And members can bring home a carton of farm fresh eggs for delicious meals at home. If you love the idea of learning to raise and care for poultry, we would love to have you join our poultry club!

Rabbit Club

Picture
The Sunny Rock 4-H Club currently has about 25 members, ranging in age from 8 to 17.  Members feed the rabbits on their assigned day of the week.  Each rabbit gets 3/4 cup of grain, and large handful of hay for eating, and plenty of water.  Rabbits are also given lots of attention and even go on walks on leashes!

The rabbit house is closed to the public but the rabbits can be viewed from the outside.  You may only visit inside the rabbit house if a 4-H member is there and gives you permission.

We sell rabbits - if you are interested, please contact us through this web site.

Sheep Club

Picture
The sheep club breeds and raises Registered Finnsheep. We currently have two rams, Mocha and Raylan. We also have twelve ewes: Fluff, Sage, Sabie, Ivory, Viola, Sadie, Toffee, Petal, Daisy, Pie, and Mystery.

In the spring time, many lambs are born to either help the herd grow, or are sold when they are old enough.
The Sheep club meets about once a month, and meetings discuss breeding, shearing, basic care of the sheep.
